Q&A - Song Writers
Song Central is a new site. Visit this edition’s quick Q&A to get a clearer view. ......>

First Tender!
Our first  Industry Tender has only just closed.  Many fine songs were submitted in response to the request for a country pop song to suit a young 3 girl band. We look forward to hearing if any are selected  and, of course,  to our next tender!

320 registrations in first two weeks—

includes industry heavyweights

Song Central went live on the internet on June 3, but it was after Graeme Philipson’s article in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age on June 17 that the word started to get out about this new desk-top service for songwriters and composers and the industries that use their material.

With Philipson’s article calling us a “kind of a dating site for songwriters and songs”, interest was piqued and the registrations started to flow in.

Among the anticipated early adopters were a surprising number of industry registrations—a market with whom we hadn’t even begun a dialogue! Senior Management from major publishing organizations that included Warner/Chappell Music Publishing were among the first to register.

And, after just a few weeks since going live, there are already some extremely fine potential users of original songs and music. We’ve spoken to all of them and the vast majority are looking to Song Central to solve their problems of access to new material, particularly from unknown songwriters and composers.

“The site could be extremely useful for our organisation, enabling us to source new talent and material in our own time with efficiency and convenience”

Matthew Capper, General Manager, Warner/Chappell Music  Publishing

Who’s Looking Page

Because of the immediate grasping of the powerful potential that Song Central provides industry users and their keenness to sign up for it, we have launched a new page for songwriters and composers. Called Who’s Looking, it will provide them with up-to-date information on the industry people who are browsing the showcase database and who have the potential to access their material.

Great Quality Material

The quality of songs we have received so far is very encouraging! It just fuels us on our mission – to provide the means for great songwriting talent to be given an opportunity to be considered. We will keep spreading the word to more potential users of the songs, music and talent on Song Central.

If you have any contacts, suggestions or sites we could link to/from that to help spread the word -  we’d love to hear from you just email admin@songcentral.com.au.

One Showcase for All

Showcase 1 and Showcase 2 are now one Showcase.  All material is stored in the same place and equally accessible by industry browsers. Professional songs distinguished by a P.

You will notice minor amendments to those areas of the site that deal with showcasing. They will be self-explanatory and will basically simplify the process and create an even more level playing field.

The major difference is that any song or piece of music written by a professional, co-written with a professional, that has received a favourable professional review or has been successful in a songwriting competition, will now have a P symbol next to it. The P now becomes just one of a list of search criteria that industry users can search on, rather than having separate showcases for new and established writers and material.

Song Central Q&A

How does this site help me become better ‘’known’’ as a songwriter?

Similar to a painter. How does an unknown artist become better “known” as an artist? By painting quality work and finding ways to showcase and expose their creativity as often (and for as long as possible) to the widest audience. Art can be easily showcased at community events, restaurants, public places and, eventually, commercial art exhibitions as it is visual and, unlike songs and music, does not require a compatible sound media player.

Also, if material from a songwriter/composer on Song Central is selected by an industry user, Song Central will award that songwriter/composer with a (‘’crotchet”) . Similar to a * rating, crotchets are visible to browsers and thus help build profiles for songwriter/composers on Song Central.

Songcentrals searching tools enable industry users to search for songs by criteria that includes genre, sub-genres, song subject or theme etc and they are also able to search by song writer (you).

Another way to increase your profile is by doing well in established songwriting competitions. Songs that achieve results in songwriting competitions get tagged with a P (for professionally recognized material) that is reflected in your songs tags on Song Central, thus increasing the status of your profile.

Remember Songcentral's approach is to let the songs do the "walking and talking." We believe the cream "rises to the top”, it just has to be in the bottle….

Won’t industry users just be interested in the professional songs only?

Our feed back from industry users is ‘two fold’ … yes, they like to know they are able to view the professional material, however, they recognize that new talent exists elsewhere that hasn’t yet surfaced. In the past, accessing of this source of talent and material has been a major problem. Song Central now provides a bridge between this source of unknown material & talent and people in the business of using it and they are keen to cross that bridge.

So, whilst they might keep an eye on professional stuff, they are always on the look out for new talent and material that has potential to be developed.

Why would industry users want to use Song Central when they have their own suppliers for new material?

Song Central increases and widens their options for sourcing new material. It gives them access to a new source of material and talent not previously possible and is a service that can be easily incorporated with existing strategies for sourcing new material.
